FAQ
Kenya eTA Transit FAQ
Do I need a Kenya eTA if I do not leave Nairobi airport?
You may not need one if you remain within the airport precincts and do not pass immigration. This is the classic airside transit scenario. Confirm with your airline because baggage and ticketing details can change the answer.
Do I need a Kenya eTA if I have to collect my bags at JKIA?
You should plan for an eTA if collecting bags requires you to pass immigration. This often happens when travelers book separate tickets or connect between airlines that do not through-check baggage.
Can I leave Nairobi airport during a long layover without an eTA?
No. If you leave the airport transit area for a hotel, meal, meeting, or sightseeing, you are entering Kenya and should have the correct eTA before travel.
Is there a special Kenya Transit eTA?
Yes. Kenya's official eligibility page lists a Transit eTA for travelers on transit flights through Kenya. It also lists a Standard eTA for single entry into Kenya. The right option depends on whether you are transiting or entering.
How much is the Kenya Transit eTA?
The official eligibility page checked on July 3, 2026 displayed the Transit eTA at $20 and the Standard eTA at $30. Fees and processing options can change, so verify before payment.
Do children need a Kenya eTA for transit?
If a child is entering Kenya, they generally need their own eTA unless exempt. If the child remains airside in a qualifying transit scenario, the same transit exemption logic may apply. Keep each child's passport and onward ticket details organized.
What if my flight is delayed and I have to stay overnight?
Speak with your airline and airport staff immediately. If the delay means you must leave the transit area and enter Kenya, eTA requirements may become relevant even if your original plan was airside transit.
